Nose Throat
How do you dry a runny nose and throat?
My daughter is kept awake at night with a horrible hacking cough. It goes on for weeks. The Doctors think it might be related to all the rubbush in her nose and throat. Unfortunately, they’re unable to prescribe anything that works to dry it up. Perhaps they’re restricted by her age (2years 8 months).
Has anyone had any success with this? We’re desperate. It’s so difficult for the poor girl.
Ask the doctor if you can use a nasal rinse. They are basically salty water that comes in a spray bottle or aerosol can. You spray it up the nose and it comes out the other nostril or out the mouth. You’d have to do it first to yourself and show your daughter how it works so she isn’t scared by the whole experience. Find a good way to make it fun. A lot of people swear by them, as they rinse out all the stuff in the nasal passages. Also, ask the doctor if you can give her some of the Mucinex powder packets. They come in two types (so check on which one would be safe) and because it’s a powder, you could cut down the dose. It loosens mucus.
Sounds like the poor kid has bronchitis. Has the doctor treated her for that?
Elevate her head at night. That seems to help with the coughing. A cool-mist vaporizer might help, too. Definitely have her drink a lot to keep her throat moist and to loosen the gunk. Some juice before bed might clear the stuff in her throat a bit.
Wouldn’t hurt to look around her room and the house and see if there is an allergy at work. Clear the air as much as you can, remove anything in her bed that might harbor dust mites, reduce the amount of milk products in her diet and see what happens.
If she is getting bronchitis, I have some advice. When my child got a cold, if I didn’t slam it with decongestant immediately, it always turned into awful bronchitis, big long coughing fits for days. Coughing until the stomach contents came back up. No fun for the kid. When I learned to hit the cold hard with right away with decongestant and later, also with mucinex, no more bronchitis. When your daughter is older, it would be worth a try. Some kids just seem to have really thick mucus and are prone to this.
