Did the 49ers commit one of the all time worst draft mistakes by taking Alex Smith?

At the time, most everyone seemed to think the 49ers made a huge mistake taking Alex Smith instead of Aaron Rodgers. Given that Rodgers is now a Super Bowl MVP, would it now be fair to say it was one of the all time worst draft mistakes?
I was talking about Ryan Leaf today, but I had forgotten he was picked over Manning in that draft. I have to agree that that was an epically bad selection.

Um, no they didn’t. Smith and Rodgers were considered pretty equal prospects all the way up to the draft, with Smith being the consensus #1 pick. Teams liked Smith’s intangibles and, believe it or not, there were questions about Rodgers’ arm strength.
